Summary
A six-year-old male neutered Maine Coon was presented with tonic clonic seizures during the night. The cat had been treated a month earlier for fever, acute vomiting and diarrhoea. After symptomatic therapy the cat was symptom free until the day of presentation. As an underlying disease, a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) had been diagnosed that did not require therapy. After the seizure, the cat had been presented to the emergency services at the veterinary clinic. It was responsive and orientated and the mucous membranes were hyperaemic. The haematology showed a haematocrit value of 80 l/l. After a further diagnostic work-up, an absolute erythrocytosis was diagnosed and the cat was treated with hydroxyurea. It has been on the treatment for two years. Seizures have no longer occurred, and the cat has since been disease free.
