Summary
Use of antibiotics for the treatment of ocular surface diseases indogs and catsThe ocular surface is not sterile, but is populated by physiologicalmicrobiota. When choosing an appropriate antibioticfor the prophylaxis or treatment of bacterial infectionsof the ocular surface, the veterinarian not only requiresknowledge of the microbiota and any possible pathogenicbacteria, but also a good understanding of the mechanismof action, the spectrum and possible adverse effects of theantibiotics available for ophthalmic use. This publicationprovides a summary of the literature about the microbiotaof dogs and cats, as well as information about the currentlyused antibiotics and should thus assist the practitioner withtheir decision-making.
