Zusammenfassung

Im vorliegenden Fall wurde eine zehnjährige Katze mit den Symptomen Fieber, Anorexie, allgemeine Schwäche und Hämaturie untersucht. Die hämatologische Untersuchung ergab eine Anämie, Thrombozytopenie und Leukopenie. In den Blutausstrichen wurden in den Erythrozyten Babesiacanis- ähnliche runde Strukturen gefunden. Mithilfe der PCR-Technik wurde das genetische Material –18S RNA (559 Basenpaare [bp]) von Babesia spp. nachgewiesen Die Sequenz des PCR-Produkts zeigte eine Homologie von 87 % mit Babesia (B.) felis und 95 % mit B. canis canis. Die Katze wurde mit Imidocarbdipropionat erfolgreich behandelt. Die positiven Ergebnisse der PCR und das Ansprechen auf die Therapie mit Imidocarb weisen darauf hin, dass hier ein erster Fall von Katzenbabesiose in Polen vorlag.

Feline babesiosis
The study was aimed at determining the cause of a disease in a 10-year-old queen with the symptoms of weakness, anaemia, fever and haematuria. The haematological examination revealed anaemia, thrombocytopenia and leucopenia. Blood smears showed round structures in erythrocytes similar to Babesia (B.) canis. The PCR reaction detected genetic material of 18S RNA (559 bp) of Babesia spp. which showed 87% homology with B. felis and 95% with B. canis canis. The treatment of the cat with imidocarb dipropionate resulted in full recovery of the animal. Based on the results of the haematological and molecular examinations and the efficiency of the therapy, we could assume that this was the first case of Babesia infection in a cat in Poland.
