Summary
Neuroendocrine carcinoma (carcinoid) in the extrahepatic bileduct of an icteric catA ten-year-old, neutered male Domestic shorthaired catshowed icterus, increased hepatic enzyme values and totalbilirubin. It was euthanized due to the poor prognosis.Pathomorphologically, an exophytic proliferation in theextrahepatic bile duct was found consisting of nests ofmonomorphous tumour cells. Neurosecretory granuleswere demonstrated by light and electron microscopy.Immunohistology revealed an expression of synaptophysin, chromogranin A and neuron-specific enolase. Based onthese findings, a neuroendocrine carcinoma (carcinoid)of the extrahepatic bile duct resulting in a posthepaticobstructive icterus was diagnosed.
