The present and future meaning of veterinary care in dairy farming from the farmers‘ perspective

Zusammenfassung

Der fortschreitende Strukturwandel im Nutztierbereich beeinflusst spürbar die Aufgaben der Tierärzte in der Milchviehhaltung. Zentrale Fragestellungen einer Online-Befragung von Milchviehhaltern im Herbst 2013 waren daher die Anforderungen der Milchviehwirtschaft an die tierärztliche Betreuung sowie deren aktuelle und künftige Bedeutung. Der Fragebogen mit 35 Fragen im Single- oder Multiple-Choice-Verfahren wurde über die Fachzeitschrift „ELITE“ beworben. Die tierärztliche Tätigkeit ist und bleibt für die teilnehmenden Milchviehhalter (n=573) bedeutsam: Künftige Kernkompetenzen werden in der Einzeltierbehandlung (53,8 % der Betriebe), Herdengesundheit (57,1 %), -fruchtbarkeit (56,4 %) und Eutergesundheit (45,2 %) gesehen und bereits aktuell stark beansprucht. Verbesserungspotenziale deuten sich dagegen in der tierärztlichen Bestandsbetreuung und Beratung an, hier liegt die Zufriedenheit lediglich bei 67,8 %. Darüber hinaus wird dem Berufsstand bei der Fütterung kaum Kompetenz (16,3 %) zuerkannt und er eher selten mit hier anfallenden Aufgaben betraut (13,8 %). Ebenso werden durch die Tierhalter vernachlässigte Bereiche erkennbar: Schwerwiegende Klauenerkrankungen werden häufig medizinisch nicht umfassend versorgt (44 %), die Einbindung insbesondere veterinärmedizinischen Know-hows bei der Jungtieraufzucht besitzt einen zu geringen Stellenwert (28 %). Zentraler Erfolgsfaktor der tierärztlichen Tätigkeit wird mehr denn je die Ableitung betriebsindividueller Lösungen sein. Dies erfordert neben aktuellster tierärztlicher Fachkompetenz auch eine stärkere Reflexion der landwirtschaftlichen Perspektive, ohne ihr das Tierwohl unterzuordnen. Neben den traditionell etablierten Aufgabenfeldern gewinnt dabei die Sensibilisierung der Tierhalter für eine medizinisch-professionelle Bearbeitung von Klauengesundheit, Jungtieraufzucht und Fütterung an Bedeutung. Es gilt, sich als kompetenter Partner zu positionieren, um letztlich auch praktisch in den jeweiligen Aufgaben tätig werden zu können.

Summary

It is noticeable that the progressive change of dairy production strongly affects veterinary work with dairy cattle. Therefore the key objective of an online survey that was carried out in autumn 2013 was to investigate the current and future demand for veterinary support of dairy farmers. A questionnaire with 35 questions (single and multiple choice method) was promoted by the dairy farming magazine ELITE. 573 dairy farmers took part. The most important results can be summed up by one simple sentence: Veterinary work is and will be important. The core competencies of veterinarians include the treatment of individual animals (53,8 %) as well as the maintenance of herd health (57,1 %), fertility (56,4 %) and udder health (45,2 %). However, the survey also reveals that improvement might be necessary in the fields of herd health management and veterinary consultation: Only 67,8 % of the participants are satisfied with this part of the veteterinarian´s work. Furthermore it turned out that nutrition-related competencies of dairy practitioners are not being noticed by dairy farmers (16,3 %), which is the reason why veterinarians are only rarely involved in dairy feeding (13,8 %). Besides, the study shows that foot lesions as well as young stock rearing constitute neglected areas: Serious foot lesions do not get a complete and proper medical treatment (44 %) and the value of veterinary know how in young stock rearing is only insufficiently claimed (28 %). Finding specific and appropriate solutions for agricultural enterprises will gain more and more importance in the near future as the key success factor in the field of veterinary work. This not only requires current professional veterinary competence but also a deep and comprehensive evaluation of the agricultural perspective without subordinating animal welfare to agricultural objectives. In addition to the traditionally established range of tasks, the most important requirement is to sensitize dairy farmers and to focus their attention to a complete medical treatment of foot lesions as well as the areas of young stock rearing and nutrition. Finally, it is crucial for cattle practitioners to position themselves as competent partners in order to ultimately approach the respective tasks in practice.
