Summary
Diagnosis and therapy of a chronic myelogenous leukemia(CML) in a DachshundChronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is an extremely rareneoplastic disorder in dogs and is characterized by neoplasticexpansion of predominantly differentiated (mature) granulocytesin the bone marrow, massive granulocytosis inthe peripheral blood and the infiltration of visceral organs. The disease usually takes a chronic protracted course, butin the end it frequently culminates in a blast crisis with apoor prognosis. The article describes the case of a 13yearoldfemale LonghairedDachshund, which presented withnonspecificmalaise, behavioral changes, splenomegalyand severe granulocytosis ( gt;100.000 neutrophilic, and gt;12.000 eosinophilic granulocytes/µl blood). The results ofclinical, cytological (bonemarrow, blood) and histological(spleen) examinations are presented and chemotherapywith hydroxyurea is described. The dog had a completeremission and lived for 45 months on chemotherapy. Thechemotherapyinducedmyelosuppression required severaldose alterations.
