Protothecosis in a Giant SchnauzerA three-month-old female Giant Schnauzer was presentedwith chronic haemorrhagic diarrhoea but in good generalcondition. Multiple blood and faecal analyses did not showany abnormalities. Dietary, antiparasitic, antibiotic andanti-inflammatory therapeutic trials were not successful.Endoscopically obtained tissue biopsies from the colon wallfinally gave the diagnosis of protothecosis. Based on thepoor prognosis, the owner refused therapy and the dogwas euthanised.
Post-mortem examinations confirmed the diagnosis andthe detected Prototheca organisms were classified asProtothecazopfii by immunohistochemistry and molecularbiology.
