Summary
Significance of the bacteriological results from vaginal swabstaken from bitches with overt pyometraThe aim of this study was to compare the microbial flora ofthe vagina and the Cavum uteri of 19 bitches with an overtpyometra. Therefore a preoperative vaginal and a postoperativeuterine swab were taken after the confirmationof diagnosis. Four microbial species were mainly detected:Escherichia coli (42.1%), Staphylococcus intermedius (28.9%),as well as amp;#946;- (21.1%) and amp;#947;- (15.8%) hemolytic Streptococci.Only two bitches showed no differences in their vaginaland uterine samples. In thirteen dogs, only one or two ofthe microbial species were present in both localizations, while four bitches had totally different results. In conclusion, taking vaginal swab samples for bacteriological examinationof bitches with overt pyometra is not suitable fordetermining the substance needed for a selective antibiotictherapy.
