Open Access

Open access is the free immediate access and unrestricted reuse of original works of all types by any user. The term is clearly defined in Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) the as well as the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities.

Berliner und Münchener Tierärztliche Wochenschrift (BMTW) adheres to both declarations by giving users the right to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the journal’s articles. All articles are published electronically when they have passed the peer review process successfully (continuous publication) and are accessible immediately after publication (Open Access Gold). The journal applies the Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. In this way, all the authors retain their simple user rights and can disseminate their publication digitally throughout the world by referring or linking to the original publication in the BMTW (DOI and license have to be stated as well). Authors are also permitted to post their article in this way on their own homepage, institutional server or in suitable academic repositories.

Please note that since 2020 BMTW only considers submitted manuscripts that are intended for an open access publication.

There are no submission charges, but as part of the submission process, authors already have to agree to an article publication fee at this stage, the so-called Article Processing Charges (APC). This fee, however, is only due if the manuscript is accepted for publication. It does not apply to rejected or withdrawn manuscripts.

Therefore, submitting a manuscript authors have to fill out, sign and upload the APC form as well (1) confirming that their article is to be published open access and (2) indicating who (e.g. author, author’s institution, research funder) will cover the Article Processing Charges (APC) once the manuscript has passed the peer review process successfully and has been accepted for publication. Upon acceptance of an article an invoice will be sent to the recipient stated in the APC form. The full amount has to be transferred to the publisher usually no later than 14 days after the invoice is issued. Please note that we are only able to publish accepted articles after we have received the payment.
