Surgical treatment of a perforated corneal ulcer in a Congo African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus)

Zusammenfassung
Anhand des Fallberichts eines Graupapageis (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) mit einem großflächigen perforierten Korneaulkus wird die Möglichkeit einer Bulbus-erhaltenden Operation bei einem Ziervogel dargestellt: Ein Xenotransplantat aus kommerziell aufgearbeitetem Schweinedarm (Swine Intestinal Submucosa = SIS) wurde angepasst und zirkulär in den Ulkusrand eingenäht.
Summary
The possibility to preserve the ocular globe in pet birds in cases of a perforated corneal ulcer is shown in the exemplary case of a Grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus). A commercially manufactured swine gut xenograft (SIS: swine intestinal submucosa) was cut to fi t the defi cit and sewn to the edges of the ulcer.
