Summary
Feline babesiosisThe study was aimed at determining the cause of a disease in a 10-year-old queen with the symptoms of weakness, anaemia, fever and haematuria. The haematological examination revealed anaemia, thrombocytopenia and leucopenia. Blood smears showed round structures in erythrocytes similar to Babesia (B.) canis. The PCR reaction detected genetic material of 18S RNA (559 bp) of Babesia spp. which showed 87% homology with B. felis and 95% with B. canis canis. The treatment of the cat with imidocarb dipropionate resulted in full recovery of the animal. Based on the results of the haematological and molecular examinations and the efficiency of the therapy, we could assume that this was the first case of Babesia infection in a cat in Poland.
