Summary
Case reportLithopedion due to rupture of the uterus in a pet rabbit (Oryctolaguscuniculus f. dom.)A nine-year-old, female pet rabbit was presented in theSmall Animal Clinic of the University of Veterinary MedicineHanover because of a mass on its ventral abdominal wall.Palpation revealed an intra-abdominal, movable densemass with a plain surface and thickened uterine horns. Bothabnormalities could also be demonstrated by radiography. An ovariohysterectomy, as well as extirpation of the masson the ventral abdominal wall were performed. The rabbitdied after the operation. After examination of the uterus,it was found that the animal had most probably sufferedfrom a rupture of the uterus at a later stage of pregnancy. The pathomorphological examination of the intra-abdominalmass performed at the Department of Pathology ofthe University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover revealed twocalcified, totally necrotic foetuses. According to the animal‘shistory, the lithopedion must have been at least sevenyears old.
