Summary
The aim of the study was to characterize Staphylococcus strains isolated from broiler chickens and turkeys in Poland, with particular emphasis on their ability to produce four classical enterotoxins (SEA-SED). Among many Staphylococcus isolates species, 89 strains were characterized as potentially coagulase-positive species. Of these strains, 80 were identified as Staphylococcus aureus by Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization (MALDI-TOF-MS) analysis. The other nine strains were identified as Staphylococcus delphini (4 strains), Staphylococcus hyicus (3 strains) and Staphylococcus schleiferi subsp. schleiferi (2 strains). All strains were tested for their ability to produce free coagulase. The results showed that 82 strains (92.13%) were coagulase-positive. All strains were also tested for toxin production by the reverse passive latex agglutination assay SET-RPLA-TD0900, (Thermo ScientificTM, Walthan, USA). The results showed that only some of the S. aureus strains were able to produce enterotoxins in vitro ( 21 strains produced toxin D, eight strains toxin A, two toxin C and one toxin B). The presence of enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus in samples taken from broiler chickens and turkeys poses a potential health risk to consumers. Although the literature indicates that other staphylococcal species may also produce enterotoxins, in our study none of the non-aureus strains exhibited this ability
