Summary
Vaccination is a pivotal and promising element in the prevention of salmonellosis in cattle. Where cattle salmonellosis has been diagnosed, herd vaccination with either commercial or autogenous (farm-specific) vaccines is a suitable tool for intervention. Due to the epidemiological characteristics of the course of infection, long-term continuation of prophylactic vaccination is indicated. Bacterial strains in commercially available live vaccines for calves can be clearly distinguished from field strains.
