Summary
Ileocaecal intussusception in a young guinea pig – a case reportA five-month-old female guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) was presented with general weakness and anorexia for two days. During palpation of the abdomen, a doughy structure with a size of 3 x 2 x 2 cm was found in the middle of the abdomen and after ultrasound a tentative diagnosis of an intussusception was made. An exploratory laparotomy confirmed the diagnosis of an ileocaecal intussusception. Additionally, a mass (1 x 0.5 x 0.5 cm) was observed in the lumen of the small intestine. Despite successful surgery and intensive postoperative therapy, the animal died four hours after surgery. Histopathology of the mass revealed a subacute necrotizing enteritis, but a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma could not be excluded.
