Severe granulomatous pneumonia in a young cat due to an infection with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus

Zusammenfassung

Die vorliegende Arbeit berichtet über eine hochgradige pulmonale Infektion mit Aelurostrongylus (A.) abstrusus bei einer Katze der Rasse Europäisch Kurzhaar. Das ca. acht Wochen alte Fundtier wurde mit Apathie, Dyspnoe, Tachypnoe, zyanotischen Schleimhäuten und temporärer Maulatmung in der Klinik für Kleintiere der Veterinärmedizinischen Fakultät der Universität Leipzig vorgestellt. Labordiagnostisch fiel eine hochgradige Eosinophilie auf. Im Röntgen zeigte sich eine hochgradige disseminierte alveoläre Lungenzeichnung bei nicht abgrenzbarer Herzsilhouette. Aufgrund der auch nach einem Behandlungsversuch unverändert schlechten respiratorischen Symptomatik musste die Katze euthanasiert werden. Mittels pathologischanatomischer, histopathologischer und parasitologischer Untersuchung wurde die Diagnose einer hochgradigen, vorwiegend granulomatös-nekrotisierenden Pneumonie infolge einer Infektion mit A. abstrusus gestellt.

Summary

This report describes a severe pulmonary infection of a European shorthair cat with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus. The animal (about eight weeks of age) was presented to the Department of Small Animal Medicine at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Leipzig with apathy, dyspnoea, tachypnoea, cyanotic mucosa, and temporary open mouth breathing. A distinctive eosinophilia was detected by laboratory diagnostics. Thoracic radiographs showed severely increased alveolar patterns disseminated throughout the lungs. The cardiac silhouette could not be defined. After an unsuccessful attempt at treatment, the cat had to be euthanised. The post mortem examination as well as the histopathological and parasitological findings lead to the diagnosis of a severe granulomatous and necrotising pneumonia due to an infection with A. abstrusus.
