Summary
Multifactorial respiratory tract disease in fattening pigs in an outside climate houseRespiratory tract disease resistant to therapy occurred in fattening pigs kept in an outside climate house on straw bedding. In this closed system with 80 sows and space for 600 fattening pigs relevant biotic factors were found to be P. (Pasteurella) multocida, M. (Mycoplasma) hyopneumoniae and PRRSV (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus). Additionally the following abiotic factors were of high importance for disease development: continuous flow system, a lack of solid pen walls in the outside sections, dust exposure, high daily fluctuations of temperature and relative air humidity. Although outside climate houses are assessed to meet the welfare needs of pigs due to the constant access to fresh air and large movement areas, on this farm negative factors had led to respiratory disorders in approximately 25 % of the fattening pigs. A vaccination program was successful in stabilizing respiratory health.
