Summary
Epilepsy is a frequently occurring neurological disorder in dogs and cats. The treatment of this condition should be started as early as possible and should consider both the quality of life of the patients and their owners. Accurate diagnostic workup is essential for successful treatment. The differential diagnosis of seizures and the special characteristics of the species being investigated should always be taken into consideration. This review provides some suggestions and summarises the current understanding of the genetic background of idiopathic and symptomatic epilepsy in dogs and cats.
