Surgical management of traumatic patellarluxation in a rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculi) – a case report

Zusammenfassung

Diagnostik und Therapie von orthopädischen Problemen bei Kaninchen spielen in der modernen Kleintierpraxis eine immer größere Rolle, stellen jedoch für den behandelnden Tierarzt häufig eine Herausforderung dar. Im vorliegenden Fallbericht wurde ein junges, 1 kg schweres, männlich-kastriertes Kaninchen mit einer akuten Lahmheit der rechten Hintergliedmaße in der Kleintierklinik vorgestellt. Es war zuvor vom Arm der Besitzerin gestürzt. In der orthopädischen Untersuchung wurde eine mediale Patellaluxation Grad III diagnostiziert. Da ein konservativer Therapieversuch mit Ruhighaltung (Käfighaltung) nicht zielführend war, wurde die Patellaluxation chirurgisch mittels Trochleavertiefung, Kapselraffung und Fasziendopplung versorgt. Die Wundheilung verlief komplikationslos. Der Patient war drei Wochen postoperativ lahmheitsfrei. Auch neun Monate post OP zeigte sich kein Rezidiv.

Summary

Diagnosis and therapy of orthopedic diseases in rabbits play an increasingly important role in modern small animal practice but are usually a challenge for the attending veterinarian. In the present case report, a young, 1 kg, male neutered rabbit presented in the small animal hospital with acute lameness of the right hind limb. It had previously fallen from the owner’s arm. The orthopedic examination revealed a grade III medial patellar luxation. Since a conservative therapy with immobilization (cage posture) was not successful, the patellar luxation was finally treated surgically by means of trochleoplasty technique and lateral imbrication of the joint capsule and fascia lata. The healing process showed no complications. The lameness disappeared three weeks later and even nine months after the treatment there was no reluxation so far.
