Summary
Depending on the localization, gastrointestinal tumors sum up to 1–10% of all canine neoplasia. The majority of the gastric tumors are malignant. Intestinal tumors are rare in dogs and the incidence is less than 10%. Rectal neoplasia or tumors of the colon are more common than neoplasia of the small intestine. Clinical symptoms in patients with gastrointestinal tumors are mostly unspecific and variable. The unspecific symptoms are vomiting, weight loss, anorexia, hematemesis, melena, and tenesmus. The diagnostic work up includes clinical examination, laboratory testing, radiographs, ultrasonography of the abdomen with fine needle aspiration of the altered organs. Advanced diagnostic procedures include endoscopy, computed tomography and laparoscopy. With exception of the malignant lymphoma, surgical resection is the therapy of choice in case of gastrointestinal tumors. The decision of the surgical intervention depends on the localization and dimension of the tumor, of the (suspected) diagnosis and of the suitability for anaesthesia of the patient. The principles of surgical oncology must be followed carefully during a surgical intervention.
