The Belgian pioneer experience with insects for human consumption placed on the domestic market0 v1313 aInsects, a traditional food in many parts of the world, are highly nutritious and  especially rich in proteins and thus represent a potential food and nutrient  source. However, edible insects as an alternative protein source for human food  and animal feed are uncommonly used in Europe. Few European countries,  including Belgium since 2013, tolerated the commercialization of insects for  human consumption on their local markets. However, the legal regulations  were uncertain regarding edible insects. The new Novel Food regulation (EU)  2015/2283, applicable as from 1 January 2018 and replacing regulation (EC)  258/97, clarified that edible insects and products thereof are considered as Novel Food due to the lack of a significant history of consumption in the European  Union before 15 May 1997.  We sum up the cutting-edge Belgian approaches regarding the legal regulation  of placing on the market of insects and products thereof for human consumption.  a0005-9366
