It has been reported from almost all parts of the world. As actual epidemiological studies are very scarce in Germany the purpose of the present study was to estimate the current spread of this infection. A total of 4724 dog sera from years 2004–2013 were tested for antibodies to B. canis by the tube agglutination test. Titers ranging from 50 to 1600 were detected in 284 (6.0%) dogs. In the majority of cases (83.7% of agglutinating sera) low titers, 50 and 100, respectively, were achieved. In contrast, less than 1% of sera (n = 46) had titers of ≥ 200 only. Twenty-eight of these sera (0.6% of all sera) showed a titer of 200, ten (0.2%) a titer of 400, six (0.1%) of 800 and two sera (0.04%) yielded a titer of 1600 each. Assuming that titers of ≥ 200 are positive a sero-prevalence of 0.94% was achieved. This result was only a little below that of year 1978 (Weber and Schliesser, 1978) indicating a very slow spread of B. canis infection in dogs and confirming its sporadic character. a0005-9366
