The epidemiological situation of brucellosis in Menoufia Governorate, Egypt, was evaluated on the basis of the official records obtained between 2011 and 2013 and our collected data (questionnaires) during the years 2012 and 2013. The number of recorded households in the available veterinary official records was 13 548 with 42 131 animals. The number of completely sampled households (approved households) was 5227 with 26 514 animals (7133 cows, 10 148 buffaloes, 5590 sheep and 3643 goats). The number of sampled villages was 196, the villages that had approved work with households in which all animals (≥ 6 months of age) were completely sampled 180 and the representative villages were 50. The estimated study true prevalence of brucellosis was 3.74% (95% CI: 3.47–4.03%) for households and 1.61% (95% CI: 0–3.45%) for individual level. The true prevalence at species level was 1.74% (95% CI: 1–2.47%) for cows, 0.58% (95% CI: 0–1.78%) for buffaloes, 3.27% (95% CI: 1.74–4.81%) for sheep, and 1.65% (95% CI: 0–3.39%) for goats. The true prevalence of large ruminants was 1.057% (95% CI: 1.055–1.059%) and for small ruminants it was 2.64% (95% CI: 2.60–2.67%). The true prevalence at villages level was 67.35% (95% CI: 49.88–84.81%) which was one of the highest worldwide. a0005-9366
