In Germany, no statutory requirements regarding sampling, test methods and test procedure for bacteriological analyses of biogas plant residues are available. We compared the suitability of differential selective and chromogenic media for the detection of Escherichia coli, coliform bacteria, Salmonella, enterococci, and Clostridium perfringens in artificially spiked matrices and fermentation residues from biogas plants. The limit of detection determined for a particular culture medium using spiked matrix was dependent on the bacterial strain used. 0 samples from biogas plants were used to evaluate the practicability of in vitro assessed media. The background microflora associated with these samples considerably influenced the performance of the media. Overall, we encountered difficulties with most of the agar tested including colour interpretation and colony colour of bacteria on chromogenic media other than the given specifications of the manufacturer. The results obtained in this study show that knowing about the limitations of culture techniques and media is of paramount importance when recommending test procedures for a particular purpose.}, year = {2016}, journal = {Berliner und Münchener Tierärztliche Wochenschrift}, volume = {129}, edition = {9/10}, pages = {382-388}, month = {09/2016}, publisher = {Schlütersche Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co.
