The 2016/2017 epidemic of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Europe caused by the subtype H5N8 clade 220.127.116.11 group B (H5N8B) particularly emphasized its threat to poultry farming. Between November 2016 and November 2017, 107 outbreaks in captive birds (92 poultry holdings and 15 zoos/animal parks) and more than 1,150 cases of H5N8B in wild birds were reported in Germany (Fig. 1).
