Epidemiology of Echinococcus multilocularis infections: A review of the present knowledge and of the situation in Germany
The fox tape worm Echinococcus (E.) multilocularis is considered as the cause of one of the most important parasitic zoonoses in Europe (Eckert et al. 2000,
Vuitton et al. 2015, Wen et al. 2019). Human infections can result in severe disease, characterised as alveolar echinococcosis (AE), which is usually lethal if left untreated (Vuitton et al. 2015). The incubation period of human AE has not been exactly determined, but it is assumed that it may last for periods of up to 15 years.
