Summary
After blood-sampling from the Vena caudalis mediana in about 1500 cows and heifers a painful swelling in the tailhead area occurred in several animals ( gt; 10). Active movement, in particular lifting ofthe tail was inhibited, so that the animals had difficulties with urination and defaecation.Thorough clinical examinations of 3 patients and post mortem examination of their tails revealed, that the ailment was caused by traumatic destruction of one intervertebral disc each, that is be-tween the 1 st and 2nd, the 2nd and 3rd or the 4th and 5th vertebrae. It was caused by faulty fixation ofthe tail at the blood sampling: Instead of lifting the tailhead - slowly and stretched - up to an angle of 40° to 20° to the vertical on the sacrococcygeal junction the tail was bowed upward by drawing its end crani-ally over the animals back.Several animals had to be slaughtered for animal wel-fare reasons.
