Summary
A young dog was presented with acute onset of apathy, pyrexia, sublumbal pain and lameness of the right hind limb. Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography showed an abscess in the iliopsoas muscle due to a linear foreign body. Surgical exploration with removal of the foreign body and antibiotic treatment resulted in complete recovery of the dog. The present study illustrates the need to consider a foreign body in sublumbal region in patients who show acute lameness of the hind limb with painful hyperextension of the hip, pyrexia and anamnestic respiratory symptoms. The use of an abdominal ultrasound is one of the most useful diagnostic tools.
